Affordable Burgundy from the Co-Owner of DRC: Domaine de Villaine

The Domaine

Domaine de Villaine was created when Aubert de Villaine, co-owner of the world-famous Domaine de la Romanee Conti, returned to Burgundy from the United States in the 1970s with his American wife. They settled in the village of Bouzeron, which is well-situated between Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, Tully and Mercurey in the Cote Chalonnaise. The estate was rundown when they took over, but vines were first planted in the twelfth century by monks, and it was also where the less planted low yield Aligoté Doré was grew instead of the more ubiquitous Aligoté Vert. The vineyards were tended with the care and attention one expects from Aubert de Villaine, and the wines improved over time to become outstanding representations of their respective regions.

The estate is now run by Aubert’s nephew Pierre de Benoist with organic and biodynamic farming in the vineyards, and with the Mercurey and Rully reds fermented in wood tanks, a style adopted from DRC. Production is low at circa 10,000 bottles per year, so we are delighted to be able to offer the eclectic parcel below.
