Often a supporting cast to the better known Cabernet Sauvignon, this second tasting at our Tasting Studio seeks to illuminate the possibilities of Cabernet Franc, and illustrates the ageing potential of wines made from this grape by tasting through four wines from different terroir and with different maturity.
Located in the Niagara Peninsula of Canada, Tawse Winery produces cool climate European styled wines, and their Cabernet Franc dispels the misconception that grapes from this region struggle to ripen fully.
Domaine de la Noblaie is a Cabernet Franc specialist from Chinon, and Pierre de Tuf is the top Cuvée, made by fermenting destemmed grapes in a 15th century vat carved into the local Tuffeau limestone.
We move on then to Chateau Petit Gravet Aine. Located in the Saint Emilion region of Bordeaux, the vineyard is planted to 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, one of highest proportion of Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux.
We finish the tasting by returning to Chinon, to sample the Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grezeaux 2000, and to try and understand the appeal of maturing wines made from the Cabernet Franc grape.
