For lovers of intense, crisp, mineral-driven Albarinos, Fulcro is a must-try. These wines beautifully reflect their coastal roots in Rías Baixas, Spain, showcasing unique soil profiles.🌱
Chicho Moldes Morana, the founder, focuses on old vines and minimal intervention, crafting wines that are pure and captivating. His approach includes bottling the wines by site based on soil composition. Fulcro's Albarinos do not undergo malolactic fermentation, allowing for structure and acidity, which is perfect for medium-term enjoyment🕰️. The wines are aged longer than the typical 5-6 months, with extended lees contact. Aging the wines in used oak barrels instead of just stainless steel helps create fuller-bodied, more complex wines that truly distinguish Fulcro from its peers.
Here’s a quick look at the four cuvées:
A Pedreira: The flagship wine, blending grapes from three nearby sites but is dominated by the A Pedreira vineyard. With granite soils and vines around 40 years old, it’s perfect for both short and medium-term enjoyment. Over 18,000 bottles produced annually.
Fulcro O Equilibro: The majority of grapes come from the historic A Xesteira vineyard, aged 45-70 years, featuring decomposed red slate soils. Initially restrained, this wine offers delicate balance and structure for aging. Limited to 5,000 bottles annually.
A Cesteira: The raciest of the bunch, from slate and clay soils. With an average vine age of 45 years, this wine is complex and built for aging. Only 2,000+ bottles produced annually.
Nas Dunas: The most profound and age-worthy white, sourced from a vineyard with sandy beach like soil with clay two to three metres down. A finessed and elegant wine with a fuller body. Only about 800 bottles made each year.

1/ Fulcro A Pedreira 2023 - Bt | RP94

2023 was a good year with slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in very tasty wines with good freshness and balance, as seen in the 2023 A Pedreira. It is expressive, clean and elegant and extremely tasty and salty, really impressive. It has structure and balance, 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.35 and 7.7 grams of acidity. Thirty percent of the wine was in stainless steel and the rest in barrel and foudres for four to six months. This is superb. They produced an impressive 60,000 bottles. It was bottled in March 2024. It's a bargain.

2/ Fulcro O Equilibrio 2023 - Bt

It boasts a lovely straw yellow hue. Its vibrant bouquet features citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit, complemented by hints of green apple and minerality from its slate soil terroir - rarely found in the region of Salnes.
Fermentation takes place in used French oak barrels of 500 and 700 liters, without malolactic fermentation, preserving the Albariño's natural acidity. Aged for 11 months in these barrels, the wine gains complexity while retaining its freshness and purity.
The palate is refreshingly balanced, featuring lively acidity and a smooth texture. Flavors of stone fruit and citrus culminate in a long, elegant finish.
3/ Fulcro A Cesteira 2022 - Bt | RP96

The nose of the 2022 A Cesteira is peachy and elegant, clean, precise, subtle and harmonious, very young but with incipient complexity. It unfurls more layers of aromas with time in the glass, herbs and moss, quite spectacular. The palate is powerful but terrifically balanced, with pungent flavors, intense and persistent. The destemmed grapes were pressed, the juice let to settle and then it was put to ferment in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. The wine was transferred to a 2,500-liter oak foudre, where the wine matured for 10 months. It has a velvety palate, fine-grained and harmonious, balanced and long, very elegant and subtle. 3,400 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2023.

4/ Fulcro Nas Dunas 2021 - Bt | VNS95

The 2021 Albariño Nas Dunas, from Salnés, Rías Baixas, comes from ancient dunes over schist soils and spent 11 months in 700-liter barrels. The aromas include lime, apple and pear with a hint of maturity. The palate remains compact and balanced, showcasing lasting texture and subtle aged notes. Broad yet focused, the 2021 reveals a uniquely savory character.
