Grand Cru Selections from Louis Jadot
Louis Jadot

Everyone should be pretty familiar with this angel label in light yellow👼🏻! Louis Jadot is a premier name among Burgundy's negociant firms, renowned for exceptional quality and consistency. Established in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, and was acquired in 1985 by Kopf family, who was previously the importer of Louis Jadot wines in the United States.
Currently, Louis Jadot manages over 60 hectares of its own vineyards while sourcing grapes from local growers, amounting to 270 hectares across the region. Noteworthy vineyard holdings include Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules and Gevrey-Chambertin for reds, and Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru and Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru for whites.
Winemaking at Louis Jadot focuses on expressing the terroir, a principle established by legendary winemaker Jacques Lardiere, who led from 1970. Lardiere retired in 2012, succeeded by Frederic Barnier. Frederic Barnier has successfully maintained Louis Jadot's reputation for excellence, following Lardiere’s philosophy of letting wines shine on their own. 🍷
Minimal intervention is key at Louis Jadot. There is no formal pre-maceration, temperature control during fermentation, or pumping over; only punching down is used. The wine stays in the vat until the chapeau of skins and pips sinks, signaling the end of fermentation. It is then aged in barrels, typically a third with new oak or up to 50% in weaker vintages. Whites may have partial malolactic fermentation blocked to retain acidity, while reds are fermented at high temperatures and macerated for up to a month for complexity.

1/ Maison Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 - Bt | RP95
HK$1500 ▷ HK$1380
The 2016 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, unfurling in the glass with a lovely and expressive bouquet of cherries, dark chocolate, incense and subtle hints of smoky new oak and clove. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and velvety with a deep core of fruit, tangy but ripe acids and a long, penetrating finish. It's a beautifully elegant and direct example of Chapelle-Chambertin, from a parcel planted in 1920-1921 where most of the old vines remain intact.

2/ Maison Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2014 - Bt | NM92-93
HK$1500 ▷ HK$1380
The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which comes from three sources, is a little more savory on the nose compared to the Clos Saint Denis, perhaps sans the same level of purity. There is more tertiary notes here, a hint of bacon fat even. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly broader tannin than the Clos Saint Denis that lends it the weight, the presence, albeit without the nervosité or the mineral core expressed by the Clos Saint Denis. Very fine, but I would like to see more nuance develop during the rest of its élevage.

3/ Maison Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2016 - Bt | NM93-95
HK$1600 ▷ HK$1460
The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the Clos Saint-Denis, although I felt that there is more detail and complexity in situ. The palate is very refined with filigree tannin, great tension and focus, a gentle grip in the mouth with an almost tart, tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I also appreciate the spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb.

4/ Louis Jadot Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru 2001 - Bt | RP93
HK$2450 ▷ HK$2250
The 2001 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is a beauty, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, dark berries, rich forest floor, black truffle, dark chocolate and violets. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a broad, textural attack, powdery structuring tannins and superb depth at the core, concluding with a long, savory finish.
