Collectible German Rarity from 140 Years Old Ungrafted Vines
Weingut Zehnthof Luckert Creutz Sylvaner 2018 and 2019
Only 600 bottles produced each year from ungrafted old vines that date back to 1870, today’s ex-Domaine offer is of the rare 2018 and 2019 vintages of the Creutz Sylvaner cuvee from the historic Sylvaner producer Weingut Zehnthof Luckert. Based in the Sulzfeld village of the Franken wine region, the Luckert family has been producing wines since the 1960s, and the vineyards have been farmed organically since 2009.
Through pure coincidence, proprietor Ulrich Luckert discovered the 140 years old Creutz vineyard in Sulzfeld in 2010, one day before the ungrafted vines were going to be uprooted forever. The vineyard of 700 vines consisted mainly of the more complex Yellow Sylvaner variety, is extremely narrow, and can only be worked manually. The yields are low as can be imagined from such old vines, and the wine is fermented by natural yeasts before malolactic fermentation, and aged on lees for 7 months in 400-litre barrels made out of Spessar oak from the nearby forest. Wines were made by the Luckerts from this vineyard since 2012, and vintages were subsequently judged as “Best Sylvaner of Germany” many times in recent years.
The wine is complex, full-bodied, saline, and with elegant texture. It’s a match against great Burgundies in blind tasting, and as with all the other Luckert Sylanvers, it is made to age and should ideally be left to rest in the cellar or decanted in advance before serving now.
Having sold out of our original 12 bottles allocation of the 2018, we are delighted to be able to offer additional quantities of the 2018 vintage from the family’s private cellar, as well as small quantities of the new 2019 vintage.
