2010 : Piedmont’s “Once In A Generation” Vintage

🍷The 2010 vintage in Piedmont is widely acclaimed as a contemporary classic 🇮🇹🍷, with critics showering praise on the wines’ exceptional quality. As Jancis Robinson has commented, 2010 vintage is "a classic vintage with plenty of acidity, firm but ripe tannins and near-perfect balance in many wines”. Antonio Galloni has gone even further, describing the 2010 Barolos as a "modern-day classic" with "transparent, vibrant wines that pulsate with tension, crystalline purity and site-specific nuance”. He is equally positive on the 2010 Barbarescos, suggesting the vintage may prove to be "a truly great, iconic" one for the appellation.

We're thrilled to offer a selection of standout 2010 Barolo and Barbaresco wines, including a deep, cellar-worthy AG98+ Roagna Barbaresco Crichet Paje 2010, a richly layered AG100 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2010 which is described as "one of the wines of the vintage", an impeccable AG100/RP100 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva 2010 with great power and finesse, and a AG100 Vietti Barolo Ravera 2010 that brings you classic Nebbiolo sensations as well as lasting aftertastes.

1/ Roagna Barbaresco Crichet Paje 2010 - Bt | AG98+
HK$10,000 ▷ HK$9,000

The 2010 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is one of the most captivating and arrestingly beautiful wines I have ever tasted from Roagna. Intense, penetrating Nebbiolo aromatics make a strong opening statement before the 2010 literally takes over all the sense. Medium in body and yet also remarkably deep. Rose petal, kirsch, dried herbs, hard candy, mint and sweet spice develop in the glass, but it is the wine's sense of harmony that really stands out. The 2010 spent five years in cask (one less than normal), a choice that paid off handsomely.

2/ Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2010 - Bt | AG100
HK$2,000 ▷ HK$1,800

The 2010 Barolo Le Vigne is brilliant. Focused and explosive in its aromatic intensity, the 2010 is fresh and wonderfully nuanced in the glass. It is also aging at a slower rate than the Cannubi Boschis. At nearly ten years of age, the 2010 is fresh, vibrant and so full of energy. It is also every bit as memorable as it was on release.

3/ Vietti Barolo Ravera 2010 - Bt | AG100
HK$3,500 ▷ HK$3,150

The 2010 Barolo Ravera is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted from Vietti. Stunning. It's as simple as that Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices, crushed rocks and pine jump from the glass in a vivid, crystalline wine endowed with captivating purity, clarity and finesse. The 2010 takes hold of the palate and never lets up, gaining body, breadth and volume over time. A breathtaking, perfumed finish rounds out the finish. The Ravera represents a bit of a stylistic departure for Vietti and a return to a more traditional style of winemaking. The 2010 was done entirely in cask, with minimal racking. In its early years, it was virtually impossible to taste as the reductive winemaking style gave a wine with closed aromatics and searing tannin. Today, the 2010 is beginning to blossom into an epic Barolo. The 2010 Ravera may well be the single greatest Barolo Luca Currado has ever made. It is also a wine that, along with the Barolos of Elvio Cogno, show just how much potential the hills of Ravera have to offer. Readers who can find the 2010 Ravera should not hesitate. It is a legendary, benchmark Barolo in the making. As an aside, a bottle of the 1999 I tasted last year was extraordinary, and it was made in the slightly more modern style that was typical at Vietti during that era.

4/ Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva 2010 - Mag | AG100/RP100
HK$24,000 ▷ HK$21,600

Every bit as magnificent as it has always been from cask, the 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is utterly compelling. Captivating aromatics make a strong first impression. Nuanced and vivid on the palate, the 2010 Monfortino possesses remarkable finesse and power. Classic Monfortino notes of dried rose petal, leather, licorice and incense develop beautifully in the glass as the wine literally takes hold of all the senses. When it was in cask the 2010 was quite structured, but in two tastings after its recent bottling the 2010 has been much more elegant. At times, the 2010 reminds me of the 2004, with perhaps a bit less aromatic intensity but more structure. On paper the 2010 is very high in tannin, and yet that is not the way it feels at all, at least not at this point in its life. A vivid, thrilling wine, the 2010 will soon take its place among the greatest Monfortinos ever made.

-100, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, November 2016

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a perfect wine and there are few things I am more sure of in this life. This is an extraordinary creation that bursts from the glass with a level of distinct intensity and elegance that is nothing short of breathtaking. The wine literally evokes an emotional and deeply visceral reaction thanks to the lasting impression it makes on your heart, mind and gut. This Barolo opens to a delicate garnet color that is brightened with crystalline luminosity. The bouquet offers an immediate curtain-raiser with chiseled aromas of wild berry, licorice, white truffle and tar. That explosive start is followed by a mounting crescendo of complexity and nuance. The wine is extremely silky and polished in terms of mouthfeel and this helps to underline its impressive persistence. Bravo!

5/ Azienda Agricola Paitin Sori Paitin Vecchie Vigne Barbaresco 2011 - Bt | AG95+
HK$500 ▷ HK$450

The 2011 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin Vigne Vecchie is just as stunning as it has always been. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2011 is laced with rose petals, spices, mint, sweet red berries. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is simply magnificent. At the same time, the power and breadth of Serraboella comes through in spades.

-95, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, October 2014

6/ Cecilia Monte Barbaresco Dedicato A Paolo 2013 - Bt | AG95
HK$620 ▷ HK$558

The 2013 Barbaresco Serracapelli Dedicato a Paolo emerges from the estate's oldest vines, planted in 1956. Deep and sensual, with striking layers of nuance, the 2013 hits all the right notes. Readers will find a lifted, savory, intensely mineral Barbaresco built on persistence and energy. Tobacco, worn-in leather, spice, menthol and crushed rose petal add myriad shades of complexity. The 2013 can be enjoyed now, but it also has enough pedigree to drink well for another decade.

-95, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, October 2018

7/ Azienda Agricola Ca del Baio Barbaresco Asili Riserva 2011 - Bt | AG95+
HK$800 ▷ HK$720

An absolute stunner, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Asili, emerges from the glass with a mélange of exotic, beguiling aromatics. Lavender, pine, rose petal, savory herbs and melted road tar form a fabric of nearly indescribable beauty. Proprietor Giulio Grasso elected to leave the wine on its skins until the end of November. Power and finesse have never been so seamless here. Although just bottled, the 2011 Asili Riserva is a great wine in the making.

8/ Elio Grasso Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate Barolo DOCG 2008 - Bt | AG98
HK$1,180 ▷ HK$1,062

One of the truly epic, reference-point wines of the year, the 2008 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè lifts from the glass with the classic scents of Ginestra. Pine, menthol, smoke, anise, new leather and violets are just the prelude as the 2008 opens up. Dark, mysterious and totally seductive, the 2008 is simply magnificent. Grasso is one of the hottest growers in Piedmont today. This is a great example of the level of quality that is the norm at this small, family-run estate.

-98, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, May 2014

9/ Massolino Margheria Barolo DOCG 2013 - Mag | AG95
HK$1,480 ▷ HK$1,332

The 2013 Barolo Margheria is deep, layered and highly expressive, with a super-classic interplay of beguiling Serralunga aromatics, fruit and structure. Menthol, pine, tobacco, wild cherry and rose petal emerge from this deceptively mid-weight, muscular Barolo. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, the 2013 Margheria has so much to offer, but readers will have to be patient. This is an especially brooding Barolo from Massolino. And it is gorgeous.

-95. Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, October 2017

10/ Bruno Giacosa Barolo Vigna Le Rocche Riserva 2011 - Bt | RP97
HK$3,300 ▷ HK$2,970

Here we have the venerated red label. The Bruno Giacosa 2011 Barolo Riserva Falletto Vigne Le Rocche commands attention and respect. The wine successfully, and somewhat magically, turns the tables on the overdone exuberance of the warm vintage and the natural heft that is inherent to Serralunga d'Alba. It does a great job of reining in all that power and transforming it into streamlined elegance instead. The wine opens to a dark and penetrating color and an immediately expressive bouquet. Thick layers of dark fruit, iron-rich earth, balsam herb, Darjeeling tea, dried ginger and cherry cola rise from the bouquet. The wine's Falletto signature is very strong. This is a Grande Vino with the proverbial capital G and capital V.

11/ Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cerretta 2012 - Mag | AG94+
HK$3,740 ▷ HK$3,366

The 2012 Barolo Cerretta is intriguing to taste next to the Francia, as it is much more shut down and affected by its recent bottling. Today the tannins are searing and large-grained, a characteristic this wine did not show from barrel. The clay-rich soils in Cerretta tend to give a broader style of Barolo compared to Francia, where limestone is prevalent, and that is very much what comes through today. Hints of dark red cherry, plum, smoke, leather, tobacco and licorice struggle to emerge from a wall of tannin. Today, the Cerretta is a brute, with little of the perfume and finesse it showed in cask. Readers will have to be patient. The only question is how much.

-94, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, November 2016

12/ Massolino Vigna Rionda Riserva Barolo DOCG  2013 - Double Mag | AG95+/RP97+
HK$4,800 ▷ HK$4,320

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a powerhouse. Not surprisingly, Massolino gave the 2013 an extra year in cask to soften the fierce tannins, but that may not have been enough. The 2013 remains potent and explosive in the glass, with searing tannins and tons of intensity. From time to time, Rionda aromatics emerge, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013. I don't see it being ready to deliver pleasure any time soon. The 2013 was stunning from barrel, and will likely be equally compelling from bottle...one day.

- 95+, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, February 2019

The Vignarionda in Serralunga d'Alba is measured at about ten hectares, and eight single-vineyard wines claim this provenance. Massolino counts a quarter of that total, making this estate the biggest landowner in Vignarionda. First produced in 1982, this is the ace in Massolino's rotation, and the 2013 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a true standout in the appellation. It is finer, more elegant and more compact than its peers, bringing a spicy personality that belies a profound and deep nature. It's still tense, a little nervous and has some cellar time ahead of it, but this is a beautifully precise wine. This cru site is composed of sedimentary layers of sandy, yellow and ferrous marlstone that absorbs the moisture well. The soils are poor in organic substances, and therefore, the vigor of the plants is naturally reduced, as are yields, resulting in extra concentration and richness. Vignarionda also reaches phenolic maturity earlier than other sites, but that does not necessarily mean that it is the first of the vineyards to be harvested. The wine is aged in very mild oak in order to maintain the purity of the fruit and the robust tannins that come naturally to it. This is a real treasure for your cellar.
