Argentina has become the world's leading producer of Malbec wines, with the grape now widely planted and serving as a flagship variety for the country. However, Malbec's origin lies in France and thrived there until a severe frost destroyed many Malbec vines during the Middle Ages. It wasn't until the mid-19th century that Malbec was introduced to Argentina, where it found a new home in the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza near the Andes.
This tasting event will focus on the unique characteristics of Argentine Malbec through the lens of several rare and highly rated premium wines. We'll start by sampling the Bodega Aleanna Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Cabernet Franc 2012 (1,800 bottles produced), which is a blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec sourced from a chalky vineyard in Gualtallary. We'll then move on to the super rare PerSe La Craie 2015 (only 550 bottles produced), a blend of 75% Malbec and 25% Cabernet Franc.
Next, we'll try some 100% Malbec wines, beginning with the Bodegas Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2012, which is sourced from old vines located at elevations of 1,450m and 1,095m in the Adrianna and Nicasia vineyards respectively. Finally, we'll conclude the evening with the RP100 Zuccardi Finca Piedra Infinita 2016, a highly rated wine that expresses the impact of limestone soils on Malbec.
Through tasting these wines, we'll explore how different factors such as terroir, altitude, and soil type can influence the flavor and aroma profile of Malbec.
