33°C Forecast? Time for Chilled Rosé!

As we bask in the HEAT of recent 34°C weekends and look ahead to more scorching 33°C days this week, it's the perfect time to raise a glass to something crisp and refreshing – rosé wines!

Rosé wines are sophisticated and diverse, with vibrant, fruit-forward profiles that pair beautifully with a wide range of cuisines, from seafood and cheese to grilled meats (excluding beef). Their refreshing acidity and light nature make them excellent aperitifs, whetting the appetite without overwhelming the palate. Rosé have been gaining ground in the luxury wine market, with many producers aging their rosés in wood barrels to add depth, complexity, and structure.

It's time to shatter the misconceptions about rosé and embrace it. We've curated a selection of delightful offerings from Loire, Spain, and New Zealand, showcasing the great potential of this wine style – including the iconic R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia. So let’s raise a glass to the refreshing delights of rosé!

1/ Domaine de la Noblaie Goutte de Rose 2019 - Bt | VNS92
HK$145▷ HK$125

From 30 years old vines of mostly Cabernet Franc around the feet of the hillside vineyards where the richer soils lie. The wine spends 4 months on fine less in stainless steel vat without sulphites after completion of alcoholic fermentation to give it more body and complexity. Bottled with screw cap, the wine is floral with peach and grapefruit on the nose, a persistent and substantial palate, and refreshing balancing acidity.

Tasting note

Pale pink. Pretty nose of watermelon rind, raspberry and fresh cut flowers. In the mouth, ripe strawberry, lively acidity, rainwater freshness and good structure. A very fine rosé, a cut above. Excellent value.

3/ Domaine de la Noblaie Monange NV - Bt | RP89
HK$179▷ HK$150

A traditional method 100% Cabernet Franc sparkling rosé. This is aged in the cellar for a minimum of 36 months, with fruits coming from the ends of the rows in the vineyard.

Tasting note

The NV Brut Nature Monange blends 70% Cabernet Franc with 30% Chenin Blanc from vines averaging 30 years old. The wine goes into the second fermentation due to an unfinished first alcoholic fermentation and is kept at least 40 months sur lattes prior to release. The Monange is officially announced as a rosé, but the wine in my bottle is lemon to golden-yellow and doesn't show any pink hints, thus I dare to record it as a white vin de mousseux. This release is based 80% on the 2016 harvest and completed with 20% from a solera, and it comes with 12.7% alcohol. The bouquet is intense and fruity and combines ripe, yellow-fleshed fruit aromas with refreshing lemon notes. On the palate, this is a quite rich and textured but fresh and persistent sparkling wine with an elegant mousse, fine brioche notes and a textured mouthfeel. The finish is fresh and with citrus fruit notes and brioche notes. This is a full-bodied aperitif that goes even better during a meal. Tasted in June 2021 from lot 20320.

4/ Domaine Francois Cotat Sancerre Chavignol Rose 2018 - Bt | VNS93
HK$550▷ HK$470

This Sancerre Rosé is made entirely from Pinot Noir from a plot of 0.55 hectares. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation and is aged in vats. Chavignol's Kimmeridgian soils lend the wine exceptional structure and aging potential. Unlike most rosés, Cotat's thrives with 6-10 years of age, developing a chalky minerality.

Tasting note

Vivid orange-pink. Incisive, mineral-driven red currant, raspberry, orange and pungent floral qualities on the highly perfumed nose. Concentrated yet lithe red fruit, candied rose and spicecake flavors are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Finishes impressively long and gently chewy, with reverberating floral and mineral notes.

5/ Domaine Pierre Martin Sancerre Rose 2022 - Bt | VNS89
HK$190▷ HK$160

Organic. Pinot Noir from vines with an average age of 30 years old. Aged on lees in stainless steel tank.

Tasting note

Sweet smoke complements dried roses and strawberries as the 2022 Rosé Chavignol opens in the glass. This is silky yet sleek, with a stern mineral core that adds contrast as citrus-tinged orchard fruits form toward the close. It tapers off with medium-length and a citrus tinge, leaving the palate completely refreshed.

6/ Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva Rosado 2012 - Bt | RP96+
HK$1,000▷ HK$900

Tasting note

I love the rosé 2012 Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva, perhaps the finest vintage (together with the 2010) of the modern releases produced again since 2008. It's a textbook example of this unusual rosé a blend of 60% Garnacho (they use the masculine form of the name of the grape), 30% Tempranillo and 10% Viura that matured in American oak barrels for four years, during which time the wine acquired an orange color and a nutty nose with notes of candied orange peel, mushroom and forest floor. It's only 12.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.3. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2018.

7/ Folium Vineyard Rose 2021 - Bt
HK$220▷ HK$185

Crafted from Pinot Noir and Malbec grapes grown in Marlborough, this rosé features vibrant pink hues and cherry aromas. The palate delivers a burst of refreshing red berry flavors, accented by lime and delicate floral notes. A well-balanced acidity.
